Web Hosting Advice

Shared hosting may mean being associated with other businesses whose work is the search engines that serve them. If you wind up sharing an IP address (unique web server address) with an for example, a spam website, this can cause you problems if the search engines associate your site as an highly spammed site. This can be avoided by asking for your own unique IP address.

See our list of good hosting providers that will provide you a unique IP address for only a small additional monthly charge.

The most important case and reason against using free hosting accounts

When free hosting accounts first started to become available they were the search engine spammers dream come true. You could setup hundreds of small one page websites and load them with links to your real websites, thus improving the popularity of your websites and with popularity their search engine rankings. Needless to say the major search engines were not happy about being duped and manipulated in this way. Their answer to this problem was to simply quit indexing and recognizing any web page found on a free hosting service server.
What this means is that if you ever hope to get any free traffic to your website from a major search engine you might as well forget it for as long as your website is hosted on a free hosting server. Here is where the situation often gets worse. The search engines keep track of the free hosting services not by domain name but by IP number or block of IP numbers. What often happens is that even if you elect to go from the free service to the paid service your website is still technically under the same block of IP numbers for free hosts banned by the search engines. You may now have a better hosting account with more disk space, more bandwidth, no longer required to display ads for the free hosting service, and you have the ability to use your own domain name, but you may still be being blocked by the search engines. The free hosting services don’t always move your website to an unbanned block of IP addresses. They often just leave the website where it was and just turn off the limitations on the account. The one thing they can’t turn off is the major search engines hatred for free hosting services.
