Contacting Web site Owners to Trade Links
Now that you’ve decided on your potential link exchange partners, you will have one or two ways to reach them. Many website owners are savvy about how link exchanging can improve their business’ profitability. These folks may have a button or link on the home page that lets you send them a “let’s be link partners” note. (Right after I typed that last sentence, I tried to think of a site that had a “link exchange” link, and I couldn’t come up with one. So I went to Google and typed in “link exchange”, bringing up a variety of – you guessed it – link exchanges. Next, I typed in “link exchange, candy” and got a list of candy companies advertising for link exchange partners. How convenient!)

If your targeted link partner doesn’t have an automatic “link exchange”offer on their site, send the webmaster an email with your name, the name of your website and its URL. Describe your site, explain why you’d like to be link partners with them, and ask if they’d like to exchange links. You might even send them alternate descriptions for their link to your site, so that instead of expecting people recognize and click on your site’s name (www.bobsstuff.com), they click on a descriptive phrase (“buy video and fantasy games here”) that takes them to your site.
Some internet gurus advise adding the link of your prospective partner before contacting them, with the idea that you’re showing good faith in being the first to make a move. However, if you want to make sure you’re adding the link they want to the page they want, you can avoid extra work by asking first.
