Web Hosting Advice

Shared hosting may mean being associated with other businesses whose work is the search engines that serve them. If you wind up sharing an IP address (unique web server address) with an for example, a spam website, this can cause you problems if the search engines associate your site as an highly spammed site. This can be avoided by asking for your own unique IP address.

See our list of good hosting providers that will provide you a unique IP address for only a small additional monthly charge.

Hosting Control Panel Application of HTML Server
Side Includes (SSI)

Especially important when you’ve already got your pages built is knowing how a prospective web host is set up to handle SSIs. Server Side Includes are those little bits of code that can be inserted in a page and made to handle all sorts of useful functions –particularly valuable when you do lots of split testing, as I do, but also great for rotating ads and stuff like that.
Here’s the thing, though. SSIs are written as .shtml extensions, and many web hosting services don’t work with .shtml. Many don’t support .htm or .shtml extensions. Doing so adds a tiny bit of overhead in the form of a smidgen more of processing power, so they avoid it. They will tell you that they can handle SSIs, but what they mean is that you have to write out an htaccess file, then FTP it to the server, which then will parse your .shtml or .htm file into .html. If you already write code, it’s a hassle. If you don’t write code, it’s a nightmare. And did I mention that you have to go through that process for every single SSI on every one of your pages? It’s nasty, hard work, and it’s completely unnecessary if you choose the right web host.

The right web host has a good control panel that contains a little bit of software called “Apache Handler”. Cpanel is one such control panel. Flexstar is another. With a Cpanel control panel, you open up Apache Handler, type in “.html” and it converts your .shtml or .htm to .html. On every page, from then on. It’s that easy.

If you use Front Page to design your pages, you will have issues with .htm, unless you work with Apache Handler, which is found in the control panel called Cpanel or in CpanelX. This is another consideration when choosing a host. I already mentioned that you should definitely opt for a host who gives you access to a control panel over one who does not. On top of that is the fact that a professional-quality control panel will actually be of use to you. A homemade, jury-rigged control panel is a crapshoot. Look for a host with Cpanel.
